Geoff Billington: International Safety Products (ISP) has designed a new bespoke lifejacket in response to an international safety campaign on the importance of kill cords.

The lifejacket attaches to the kill cord, which clips to the boat operator and cuts the engine in a man overboard situation.

ISP sales director, Geoff Billington, said that by launching the new lifejacket the firm is supporting the RYA and the MAIB initiatives to help raise awareness to the correct use of kill cords.

“As a firm we are always looking to drive innovation in marine safety. We have seen too many incidents of people being seriously injured or even killed because of not having a kill cord or it not functioning properly. Our latest range of bespoke lifejackets feature D-rings which are designed to attach to a kill cord,” he said.

One jacket even comes with a pocket where the kill cord is already supplied and stored when not in use.

The subject of kill cords was thrust into the spotlight earlier this summer when a father and daughter were thrown from their vessel near Padstow. The MAIB investigation found that the driver was not using the vessel’s kill cord.
